QUESTION #1:  Trivia Quiz:

Somewhere in Dark City,  a sign on the outside of a cafe reads:
'Freeze your fish.'
THE ANSWER IS........
OUT OF THE PAST   1947
"FREEZE YOUR FISH"  is a sign that hung outside Marnie's Cafe in downtown Bridgeport California, location of the RKO Pictures noir masterpiece, 'Out of the Past'.  The film stars Robert Mitchum, in the most memorable performance of his career, Jane Greer who was never more beautiful and Kirk Douglas in one of his first major acting jobs.

Out of the Past is clearly one of the quintessential films of the 1940's, and includes virtually every element that identifies a film as a film noir .

A few years ago Mitchum in a interview with Robert Osbourne,  recalled his filming schedule during the making of the film.  By 1947 he was already one of RKO's main male leads and was actually working on another film at the time 'Out of the Past' went into production.  Mitchum was shooting night scenes in Monterey for the other film and then would fly up to Bridgeport in the Sierra Nevada mountians for some daylight shooting for'Out of the Past'. On one of the flights to Bridgeport the plane crashed while landing but Mitchum, a for real tough guy, survived and the filming continued that day.

Once the film was released, it's success would make Robert Mitchum RKO Picture's most important male lead and box office draw.

The film's visual style owes a debt to RKO producer Val Lawton who had nothing to do with this production, although his camera man Nicholas Musuraca lens the film and Jacques Tourneur directed it in a fashion that Lawton had established and defined at RKO with his psychological horror features like 'The Cat People' (1943), which also used both men.

If you haven't seen this one yet, put it on your 'To Do' List under ASAP! You'll find a excellent copy at the Video Haves page.

QUESTION #2

IDENTIFY THIS PHOTO

Which movie is this still from ?

THE ANSWER IS........

THE MARK OF THE WHISTLER     (1944)

Seated at the table are Janis Carter & Richard Dix.  This is one of a series of eight films based on the 1930's radio show 'The Whistler'.  Richard Dix plays in all but one alternating between the good guy and a villain. In this one Richard Dix claims a large sum of cash in a old bank account and then finds himself in a deadly dispute with two men who's father went to jail over the money.

Loaded with atmosphere, these almost creepy thrillers always open with the quote 'I am the Whistler, and I know many things. For I walk by night.  I know the tales of many men and women that have stepped into the shadows.'

The Whistler Series:

The Whistler   1944,
The Mark of the Whistler    1944
Voice of the Whistler   1945
Power of the Whistler   1945
Mysterious Intruder   1946
Secret of the Whistler   1946
The Thirteenth Hour   1947
Return of the Whistler   1948 Arthur Lyons in his book DEATH ON THE CHEAP defines 'The Whistlers' as the only true film noir serial to come out of Hollywood.
